    Meet Ben

    Mission: $9,000 Family Fundraising

    · Mission Accomplished,Mobility Service Dog

Ben is a 16 year old with Sporadic Spastic Paraplegia, a neuromuscular condition that affects the strength and coordination of his legs. As a baby and toddler Ben was always happy and smiling and he developed typically. He was energetic and high spirited and loved monster trucks and cars and everything his older brothers were doing. Ben also enjoyed playing sports with his brothers and at the age of 3 even played organized soccer. Soon afterwards we noticed that Ben was unable to keep up with his faster and more coordinated teammates, peers and brothers and we knew that something was not right. He continued to struggle with walking and coordination and endured many rounds of diagnostic testing until we finally arrived at a tentative diagnosis.

Today, Ben is a quiet, introverted and intelligent high school student who plans to attend college. Ben feels lonely and sad at times because of his disability and feels like he just doesn’t fit in with his peer group. He enjoys music and his favorite band is PENTATONIX and also enjoys sports, particularly the CLEVELAND CAVALIERS and both the BUFFALO SABRES AND BILLS (which is where his family is originally from). Ben is also an avid swimmer. As you can see from his picture, Ben is an animal lover who enjoys spending time with his multi-poo Steve.

Ben would benefit from a service dog in many ways. Ben is intimidated by all things that are new and has a difficult time participating in activities outside his comfort zone. He has already overcome his fear of roller coasters but not his fear of heights. With a service dog, Ben would always have a friend and companion around. This companion would not judge him based on his appearance and disability and would lovingly accept him for who he is. A service dog would allow Ben, who struggles with balance and stability, to overcome some of his physical limitations while allowing him the opportunity to become increasingly independent.
