Meet Antonio

Mission: $9,000 Family Fundraising

August 25, 2016

Meet Antonio. Antonio is a 10 year old boy who is funny and loving. He has been described by several people as being effervescent. I think this is an accurate word to describe him. Once you meet him, he is pretty unforgettable. He was diagnosed with autism and ADHD at age 3 ½. Antonio has since been diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder and an anxiety disorder. In the years since his diagnosis, Antonio and our family have had to face the daily challenges associated with Autism.

Antonio, although verbal, is challenged with communication and social skills, that sometimes keep him isolated in his own world. We are hoping a service dog would help bridge the gap between himself and others by helping to calm his anxiety with the added benefit of being a much needed friend and companion. We also think it could give Antonio a sense of confidence and responsibility by being able to take care of something of his own.

Antonio also struggles with behavior and separation anxiety. His separation anxiety limits his independence daily. Bedtime routine is very difficult as the anxiety of being alone in his room can be overwhelming for him. As his parents, it is very difficult to see our child fight this battle on a nightly basis as the last event of the day.

Antonio says he wants a service dog to be his “best buddy”, to spend time with him and be there for him. We feel that a dog would make a life changing difference for Antonio. Dogs are such incredible animals and we believe that a dog can reach Antonio on a level no “two-legged” friend can.
